​On 9-10 May 2017 Edinburgh Napier MSc students studying International Festival and Event Management and industry professionals from across the Scottish festival and event sector were invited to attend a two-day Event Safety and Security course at Edinburgh Napier, sponsored by EventScotland.

Visiting Professor Chris Kemp, known throughout the world for his work on the safety of crowded places and his ceaseless endeavour to make events safer, led the timely two-day programme which focused on providing an insight into what it is like to be faced with an incident at a major event. Following the tragic events in Manchester, Professor Kemp's input could not be more relevant.

The course saw a series of incidents take place where participants had to work their way through a number of possible outcomes. Staged scenarios covered a range of leadership and management skills focusing on problem solving, negotiation, communication, leadership styles, empathy, teamwork and organisational culture.

The course successfully trained parcipitants on the key areas of event safety and security as well as teaching them how to make fast decisions and solve problems under pressure.
