ENGAGE fundraising event for Breast Cancer

A treadmill walk is taking place at ENGAGE, Sighthill Campus on Thursday 23rd May to raise money for breast cancer charities.

If you'd like to get involved or sponsor those taking part- full details can be found on the attached poster.

The event is being organised by School of Engineering and the Built Environment lecturer Shalu Madan.

Road closure Broomhouse Drive

Road closure means that all buses heading from the Gyle into the city (2 and 22) will be diverted to Calder Road. Also, all traffic heading into the city will have to go up to Calder Road. This closure will potentially mean large delays especially at the Broomhouse Road/Calder Road roundabout. The closure will be in place for four weeks.

Online Resources intranet changes

The final stage in a phased approach to remove dropdown options from the ‘Online Resources’ menu has now been completed.

This change happened as the result of staff problems in finding other resources not present on the dropdown menu. As there are too many resources (almost 30) to add them all to a dropdown menu, the decision was made that to improve usability, all staff should be directed to the full Online Resources list.

All links are still available, and none have been removed. If you would like to suggest any other resources for this list, please email Catriona Rannoch in IDEA.

University Authorised PC Specification Updated

The Authorised PC Specification has been updated to reflect the one year extension to the contract. Please ensure you follow the instructions, detailed in the specification, carefully when requesting your school, institute or service raises a requisition for PCs and or related monitors etc.

Notice for Academic Staff: Final Year Student Account Deletes

All final year students will have their accounts deleted on Monday 1 July 2013; this includes their University email accounts as well as their network accounts.

Please highlight to your final year students that there are several actions that they must take before they graduate to ensure they don’t lose any files – a list of these actions is available on the Information Services Final Year Students Student Portal page.

Please note:

This does not apply to students continuing their current course next year.
Students completing a course this year but intending to start a new course in 2013/14 will have their accounts deleted and a new one created for their new course - all existing files will be deleted so they need to ensure that they take a copy of any files they wish to retain from their current course.

Lothian Buses will operate a Saturday Service on 6 & 27 May 2013

Services X12 & 35 will run a public holiday timetable on these Mondays with Services 61 & 67 running a normal weekday service.

On 6 May, Service 45 will run on a public holiday timetable.

Our Waverley Bridge Travelshop will be open on these days 10am - 6pm, however Hanover Street, Shandwick Place and Jarnac Court Travelshops and our Lost Property Office will be closed.

Important - Parking around Sighthill Campus

Police Scotland have informed the University that there have been further complaints over inconsiderate parking around Sighthill Campus, particularly in Sighthill Green.

The Police have advised that over the coming weeks monitoring the situation will be a priority for local officers.

Any car found to be causing an actual obstruction will be towed away at the expense of the owner, the cost of recovery being £150 plus a daily surcharge from the car compound. Six cars have been towed away for blocking access to the rear of the fire station and health centre this week alone.

Scottish Teachers' Superannuation Scheme

A revised member contribution structure has been introduced for members of the Scottish Teachers’ Superannuation Scheme with effect from 1 April 2013.

First Principal of Napier College - bereavement notice

Dr Joseph Dunning CBE, the first Principal of Napier College of Science and Technology in 1963, has passed away. He retired in 1981 at the end of a period of unparalled service and devotion to the College. The development of Napier College from a local technical institution to a major force in Scottish higher education took place under the direction of Dr Dunning.

In addition, Dr Dunning made a number of notable contributions to education as a whole in Scotland. His work on the structure of Scottish secondary school ordinary level awards (The Dunning Report ) is highly respected and is quoted widely. After he retired Dr Dunning continued to play an active role locally being Chairman of the Lothian Health Board form 1983 to 1984.

Dr Dunning gained a London University Honours Degree in the early days of his career in the metallurgical industry. In 1968 he completed his thesis for a Master of Education degree at Durham University. In 1977 he was awarded the honour of Commander, Order of the British Empire. The Council for National Academic Awards conferred upon him the degree of Honorary Doctor of Education in 1983.

He was awarded the honorary Fellowship of Napier University in 1989.
