Talking Glasgow 2014

Summary
Catch up with our Commonwealth stars

Full Story

EVERYONE has something to say about Glasgow 2014.

And especially the Edinburgh Napier students and graduates who have been in the thick of the Games action.

We took a moment to catch up with the sporting stars the University has supported on their journey to the Commonwealths.

4x400m relay runner Greg Louden (21) has just completed the third year of his BSc Sport & Exercise Science degree, and will never forget the opening ceremony.

“I didn’t want to miss it - home games and my first games,” he said. “It was incredible.”

Greg, who will compete on Friday, said: “Edinburgh Napier have supported me hugely. They granted me a month off to attend training in the USA just before exam time – if I hadn’t gone, I wouldn’t be here. I can’t thank them enough.”

Long-jumper Jade Nimmo, who is going into her fourth year of a Sports Science degree, was thrilled to be part of the Games, despite not making Thursday night’s final.

She said: “It was my first major championship as a senior athlete, and my first Commonwealth Games. It’s 17 different sports, not just athletics, so to be part of that has been pretty amazing.”

She added: “The University has been really supportive. The staff are used to working with elite athletes, so I was able to reschedule one of my exams when I was at a warm winter training camp, and I also received sponsorship.”

Crackshot Ben Kelly (21), a Biomedical Science student, was excited to compete at the Games only four years after taking up the sport.

The Isle of Man team member said: “The University has been great. While down at the GB Selection Academy I tested my rifle to find out I needed a new barrel – I had two weeks to find one and two weeks to find £2,500 to pay for it plus the cost of ammunition. So the sponsorship came at the perfect time.”

Netball star Lynsey Gallagher (22) picked up a BSc (Hons) Sports Science & Exercise this summer, and was one of only two students picked for Scotland’s Commonwealth netball team.

She said: “It wasn’t easy. There were occasions when I would miss exams or tests because I’d be at a training camp or competition abroad, but my lecturers were really supportive and we always came up with an alternative way of doing things.”

She added: “To be chosen to represent your country is amazing but when it’s at a home Games – that’s really special.”

Also competing was track cyclist Charlene Joiner, another sports science graduate.

While another alumnus still hoping to make her mark on the Games is 2012 law graduate Lynsey Sharp, who broke the two-minute barrier earlier this season for the 800m.

Congratuations also go to sports science graduate Sarah Clark for her gold medal-winning performance at the Games.
