Lecturers from our School of Arts and Creative Industries Emily Alder, Sarah Artt and Laura Joyce are hosting a series of public lectures to celebrate the events which led Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein.
Sarah Artt and Emily Alder will be involved in a talk at the National Library of Scotland tomorrow (Thursday 16 June) called Unquiet Dreams: Ghost stories at the Villa Diodati, 1816. The event explores the significant moment in Gothic fiction’s history when Mary Shelley was inspired to write ‘Frankenstein’ and John Polidori was inspired to write 'The vampyre'. It will look at the writers' legacy in literature, science, and film, with our Lecturers discussing along with Dale Townshend (University of Stirling) and Linnie Blake (Manchester Metropolitan University).

Join for a unique creative writing workshop at Edinburgh's world class Surgeons’ Hall Museums in celebration of the ideas and debates that inspired Mary Shelley to create Frankenstein. You will examine themes of experimentation and medical breakthrough, drawing your inspiration from Mary Shelley's classic novel and the fascinating collections on the history of medicine held at the Museums.
