Title
Expert advises UNESCO on sport policy

Summary
Dr Eleni Theodoraki co-authors international sport action plan

Full Story

Dr Eleni Theodoraki has contributed to an important sport policy and action plan recently adopted at international level.

The UNESCO action plan for sport was put forward at the Sixth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport, which took place at the Kazan Russian Federation from 14- 15 July 2017.

The policy links sport in its wider sense to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals – in particular those relating to social development and inclusivity.

Dr Theodoraki, Associate Professor of Edinburgh Napier’s Business School said: “[The policy] contains insights from my work as sustainability commissioner for the London Olympic Games and from the research project I run on social leveraging of the FIFA 2022 World Cup - with colleagues Jane Ali-knight, Maktoba Omar of Edinburgh Napier and Dan Musignuzi and Girish Nair of Stenden University, Qatar.

“It is a great opportunity to use research insights to influence international development and to help sport and physical activity better serve the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.”
