1 .Overview of Mentorship in 2010 Ci  Ci Stuart

 

The presentation gave a very clear overview of the way mentorship preparation has developed over the last 50 years. The main focus of her presentation was on how guidelines from the  NMC can be meaningfully integrated in the preparation of mentors in the 21st century.

2 . Mentorship : Hub and Spoke approach  Hazel Powell / Caroline Gibson

 

The next presentation was from Hazel Powell Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier
University and Caroline Gibson Senior  Lecturer  at Queen Margaret University.
Hub and Spoke approach is an interesting way to manage the supervision of students in placements when mentor numbers are  limited  or the students are in specialised placements where the direct supervisor may not be a nurse. This approach aims to ensure a qualified mentor  is  aways  part of the team.

  3. International Perspectives of Mentorship by Mike Parkinson

 

Mike Parkinson is a Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University and a member of the mentorship team.The aim of this presentation was to highlight changes in the ways students are being now being educated .This in turn  is related to changes resulting  from EC regulations which will impact on how mentors will be involved in assessment and supervision of students. A key concept is how these changes  will enable greater migration of nurses throughout Europe.

 4. Update on Mentorship Database in NHS by Wendy Watson

 

Wendy Watson is The Lead For Practice Education NHS Lothian

 A key part of mentorship preparation and updating is the upkeep of the NHS Lothian and Borders mentor database.This important resource provide current information on numbers and levels of mentors throughout the region.Wendy provided a account of its development and the role of staff in keeping it up-to-date .

5. Sign off Mentors : What do they do? by Anne Moffat / Bill Lawson

 

Anne Moffat is a PEF in NHS Lothian and Bill Lawson is a lecturer at QMU

The Sign-off mentor is a lynchpin in the preparation of students as they progress towards their Degree and Registration .This session provided an overview of the role and the means by which mentors can become sign-off mentors.
