Lecture Capture
About Lecture Capture
Lecture Capture enables you to record your lectures and presentation content providing students with an on-demand access to content at a later date. The system will record the lecture presentation slides (whatever is shown on the data projector) along with synchronised audio and will also capture video if required.
Once the lecture is complete the recording can be, if required, be edited (such as ‘top and tailing’) whilst all content is indexed to allow viewers to navigate and access specific points within the presentation quickly and easily. The content is displayed in frames so that viewers will simultaneously see and hear the lecture whilst viewing a recording of the image on the classroom projector. Once any editing is complete a link to the capture of the lecture/presentation can be published to students via WebCT.
Studies have concluded that this technology is beneficial for the student learning experience, it aids student satisfaction and retention and provides greater accessibility and access to lecture content for off-campus students. It is especially heavily used by students come revision time.
The University recently hosted a meeting of the Scottish Blackboard User Group (Scot-BUG) which focussed on live Lecture Capture systems. Presentations described the impact this technology has had on the learning and teaching experience, and the slides are available from the Scot-BUG website:

About the Lecture Capture Pilot
Lecture Capture is currently being piloted at Craiglockhart where fixed cameras have been installed in rooms 3/03 and 2/17 (Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre). Shortly we will also have a semi-portable system available to provide a similar service at Merchiston. An evaluation will be conducted by Academic Development to determine the impact of the Lecture Capture system on the teaching and learning experience at the University.
The pilot is primarily designed to determine whether the lecture capture concept is useful to Edinburgh Napier and whether we wish to go ahead with a larger scale installation in the future.
If you are interested in being part of the pilot please contact the IT Support Desk in the first instance:
