Remote Access to Email

You can connect to your email account out with the University using one of the following methods:

  • Outlook Web App (OWA)
  • Outlook Anywhere
  • Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)
  • Mobile Devices
  • Remote Desktop Connection via the VPN

Outlook Web App (OWA)

You can access your Outlook account anywhere globally that has an internet connection using Outlook Web App (OWA).  Further information can be found in the OWA user guide:

OWA User Guide - Exchange 2010

Access OWA by clicking on the Email link (which can be found on the Staff Intranet top menu) or visit:  https://owa.napier.ac.uk.

Outlook Anywhere

Outlook Anywhere enables you to use Microsoft Outlook to connect to your staff email account over the Internet.  You can securely access your staff email account from outside the University network with all the features available as if you were in the office.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)

If you have Outlook Express installed on your home PC or laptop you can access your email using IMAP as an alternative to accessing your mailbox using OWA or Outlook Anywhere. IMAP can be used for off-campus access to your mailbox and is particularly useful over slow dial-up connections because it does not download your entire mailbox, allowing you to view the header and sender of an email and then decide whether to download the mail.

To find out more about IMAP for Outlook Express please read the following document:

Please note: the above instructions are only relevant for staff connecting to their University email accounts, students should go to the Email section of the Student Portal for further information about student email (you will need to log in if accessing the Portal out with the University).

Further information about Staff Mobile Devices can be found on Mobile Devices page.

Remote Desktop Connection via the Virtual Private Network (VPN)

If you require full access to your mailbox you can use Remote Desktop Connection via the VPN to access your office PC.  This will enable you to log in to your Outlook client.  You will also be able to access your email Personal Folders unlike access via OWA or IMAP.  Further information about the VPN can be found on the Remote Access to Network Drives page.
