​Skype for Business (Office 365)

 

Background

 

ImageInformation Services have piloted the Skype for Business Service internally.   Some areas of the University are currently early adopters for Skype for Business and it is intended to role Skype for Business out to the rest of the staff after the Office 365 migration has completed

 

Skype for Business is a unified communication platform that enables instant messaging, audio and video conferencing, online meetings and sharing through a unified interface or one application.

 

Potential Benefits

 

There are various benefits as a collaboration/communication tool, some benefits include;

  • You can see when your work colleagues are available
  • Stay in touch with customers
  • Reduce business travel/parking costs
  • Cut the cost of business calls

Skype for Business integrates with Microsoft Outlook enabling users to communicate with work colleagues and externals on any device and anywhere.

  • Audio calls (Skype for Business to Skype for Business)

Q:  What’s the difference between Skype for Business and Lync 2013?

A:  Skype for Business was formerly known as Lync.  They're essentially the same service, however the mobile service is still referred to as Lync 2013.

 

Q:  What's the difference between Skype for Business and Skype?

A:  Information about the differences can be found on the Skype Support Site. Please note: within the University we don't currently have the functionality to call between Skype and Skype for Business.


Q:  Can I add a photo?

A:  You cannot currently add a photo however this feature may be enabled in the future.


Q:  Where are my Instant Messages stored?

A:  Your Instant Messages are stored in a Conversation History folder within your Outlook University email account.

 

Q: How do I join a meeting?

A:  There are 3 ways in which you can join a meeting:

1.  Open the meeting from your Outlook calendar and click on the "Join Skype Meeting" link:

2. Go the Skype For Business application on your desktop, click on the Meetings icon and double click on the meeting to join:


 

3. From a mobile device, open the Skype for Business or Lync mobile app, click on the Meetings icon and double click on the meeting to join.

 

Q: Can I join a virtual meeting using a University phone or mobile phone?

A:  This functionality is not yet available.  When prompted to Join Meeting Audio select "Use Skype for Business".

 

Q:  How do I connect to a meeting from the Skype for Business Web App (external user)?

Q:  How do I schedule a Skype for Business meeting?

A:  You can either schedule the meeting from within MS Outlook or from within Skype for Business.

 

To schedule the meeting within Outlook:

  • From the Home tab of your Outlook calendar click New Skype Meeting:

              New Skype Meeting button.

  • Enter the details and complete the meeting request as you would normally.

 

To schedule the meeting from within Skype for Business:

  • Right click on the contact or group with which you wish to start a meeting.
  • Click Schedule a Meeting:

Q:  I want to install Skype for Business on my Apple device, what version of iOS is required?

A:   In order to download the Skype for Business app onto your Apple device you'll need to install iOS 8.1 or later.
