Car Parking and bike storage
To enable the construction of the new music building at Merchiston parking in the rear (North) quadrangle, immediately beside the undercroft, will be suspended until the end of the project.
As previously noted this will result in 19 parking spaces being suspended during this period. This area currently contains stands to secure bikes and an area within which motorbikes are parked. Suitable alternatives are being provided as follows:
- Temporary storage areas to the front quadrangle (the finished scheme will have integrated bike storage).
- An area to park motorbikes within the north Quadrangle (along with a safe and appropriate access route).
View the affected car parking spaces.
Please also note that eight further parking spaces will be suspended in the west car park to facilitate an alternative delivery route. These will also be suspended until the end of the project.

At the end of the project there will be 76 spaces in total. This is a loss of five spaces overall.
Q: Will there be a designated space for the student recruitment car?
Yes there will be a reserved space for this car.
Q: Will there be a barrier on the car park at Merchiston?
There can’t be a barrier on the car park for logistical reasons and we would lose more spaces if we did that. There are no plans for a barrier.
Q: Will people with child care responsibilities have priority access to car parking spaces?
The parking process will continue to run in line with the current University car parking policy.
Q: Will staff be allowed to park at Craighouse and Craiglockhart during the works?
No staff will not be able to park on these campuses.
Q: What is the policy on the use of taxis for inter-site campus travel?
Please refer to your Line Manager who will be able to advise you of the procedures in your area.
Q: Will residents be allowed to continue parking in the University car park overnight?
We can’t close the area off and cannot clamp vehicles that park there without permission. We have raised the issue with police and will also discuss this with residents.
Q: What kind of bike storage will there be?
There are currently 90 spaces. When the rear Quadrangle is taken over by the contractor (mid May) there will be temporary storage in the front quadrangle and next to the JKCC; this will provide approximately 80 spaces.
The new secure bike storage will be located next to the multi use space. We are also looking at provision of spaces to park motorbikes.
