Sustainable construction and refurbishment is referred to within the current Estates Strategy, noting that the any development at the University will be responsible, sustainable and reflect our corporate social responsibility aspirations. The values and aims of the Estates Strategy are embedded within Strategy 2020, which again highlights environmental sustainability aspirations throughout the institution.
We have investigated and developed a robust Environmental Impact Assessment tool for all construction and refurbishment projects at the University. We're still trialling the tool but we plan to launch it within the 2015/16 academic year as part of our Environmental Management System. Construction covers 24 of our 43 significant aspects through our EMS.
Our Sighthill campus gained BREEAM Excellent for design, embedding some environmental features into the building design. Our new Bainfield student accommodation site at Fountainbridge also gained BREEAM Excellent accreditation. More recently, at Merchiston, as part of the Music School, due to constraints within the assessment structure and because the project was within an existing building, the development gained Very Good BREEAM accreditation, the highest accreditation available for the project undertaken.
