Sick Pay

Sickness reports and the calculation of sick pay are the responsibility of Payroll.  By the 4th of each month, each school and service must return to us a report on absence through ill health in the previous month.

Absences are dealt with as follows:

  • From 1 - 7 days (including weekends):  a  Self Certificate must be completed, and returned to Payroll.
  • Over 7 days - a doctor's medical Fit Note is required.

If these certificates are received within the School or Service, they should be attached to the  Monthly Absence Report and sent to Payroll.

The University is responsible for paying Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in accordance with regulation laid down by the Social Security and Housing Benefit Act 1982. SSP is payable for 28 weeks in any one period of incapacity for work (whether linked or continious) as defined by the regulations. Further details of the SSP scheme may be obtained from HR .

Entitlement to occupational sick pay, payable by the University, is complementary to SSP and based on length of service as follows.
