Vice-Principal (Strategy, Resources & External Relations)
Professor John Duffield
BSc PhD CChem FRSC
John took up his post as Vice-Principal (Academic) at Edinburgh Napier University in May 2010 and became Vice-Principal (Strategy, Resources & External Relations) in August 2011. He undertook his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Wales in Cardiff. This was followed by employment at the German Centre for Nuclear Studies in Karlsruhe, Germany where he researched the biochemistry of fissile materials.
In 1985, John returned to Cardiff as a researcher and lecturer in chemistry before moving on to the Manchester Metropolitan University in 1990.
He was appointed Head of Chemical & Physical Sciences and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol in 1999 and subsequently took on the roles of Associate Dean (Resources & Strategy) and then acting Dean of Applied Sciences. In 2007, he was promoted to Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at UWE. In addition to academic leadership and management, John has retained a strong interest in research, knowledge exchange and research training and regularly acts as an external examiner for PhD dissertations. He sits on the Education Policy Board of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
