Alistair Sambell took up his post as Vice-Principal (Academic) in April 2012, joining Edinburgh Napier University from Sheffield Hallam where he was Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering & Sciences.
He gained both his first degree and DPhil from York University in Electronic Engineering, and after a spell working in the electricity supply industry joined Northumbria University to undertake research into solar energy. Here he was promoted through various roles to become Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences.
Professor Sambell is passionate about the role of higher education in transforming lives, and has been active in teaching and research throughout his career. His current research interests include the design of microwave antennas and he has also published on innovative assessment in engineering. He has a national profile that has included serving on the QAA engineering benchmarking statement review group, the IET degree accreditation panel and the committee of the Engineering Professors' Council.
Responsiblities
The Vice-Principal (Academic) leads the University’s academic agenda and has responsibility for learning and teaching, quality, enhancing the student experience and equality & diversity.
