Title
Wear it with pride

Description

Being a role model means different things to different people.

Within Edinburgh Napier’s staff LGBT+ Network, a role model is someone who is aware of their potential to influence others and intentionally exercises that influence for the purpose of helping to create a more inclusive workplace.

The latest cohort of role models’ definition is: “An LGBT+ Role Model is genuinely themselves, visible and compassionate to themselves and others. Someone who is open to challenge and change.”

Our LGBT+ Role Models strive to make our workplace an inclusive environment for all. They’re a diverse bunch who provide support within the University community, enabling people to connect, as well as helping to create a culture which allows people of all sexualities and gender identities to thrive.

They celebrate difference and encourage colleagues to join and celebrate our diverse University culture, creating a positive shared environment, which encourages both personal and professional development.

They support overcoming homophobic, biphobic and transphobic behaviours. And, as active members of our network with LGBTQ+ lived experience, they have committed to a personal development programme exploring what it means to be a role model.

In the words of our latest role models, “We’re here for LGBTQ+ colleagues, students and allies, for information, support or just a chat.” “You are enough, your feelings and experiences matter, and you are not alone. Reach out.”

You can meet our Role Models here. But how do you spot them around the University?

Well, our Role Models can choose to wear a unique symbol that signifies the important status they have and to make them more accessible to colleagues across the University. The heart shape highlights their position at the centre of the LGBT+ Network, while the colours reflect the rainbow flag, or LGBT pride flag, a symbol of LGBT pride and diversity.

The badge was also designed with an angular aesthetic to resemblance the angles seen in Edinburgh Napier’s logo and commonly used on the University’s marketing materials. And our Role Models wear it with pride!
