Our Sighthill campus’ solar panels have benefited from the excellent summer weather and are on course for their best year yet.

So far this year, the electricity they’ve generated could have boiled enough water for over 800,000 cups of tea.

147 solar panels were installed onto the Sighthill energy centre in November 2014. Since installation, the panels have generated 100,000 kWh of electricity and reduced our carbon emissions by over 43 tonnes.

At their peak, the panels can generate 24 kW per hour or over 200 kWh per day – approximately enough electricity to run an average house for 20 days or drive over 500 miles in an electric car.

The panels have a lifespan of over 20 years and we’re currently investigating the feasibility and business case for installing additional sets of panels across our University estate.

The installation of solar panels is just one of many actions and projects the University has undertaken to reduce our carbon emissions and our contribution towards global warming. Since 2006, we have reduced emissions resulting from the running of our campus buildings by 54%.
