In recent weeks, several large-scale political demonstrations have taken place on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and various suburbs in the New Territories. Clashes have taken place between police and protesters following otherwise peaceful protest activities. These have involved significant violence. Protests have also taken place inside Hong Kong International Airport from 9 to 13 August, which led to cancellations of flights and disruption to check-in services.
Reports indicate that further demonstrations may take place in the coming weeks, particularly around government buildings and major transport hubs, meaning large sections of the city may be closed off and public transport affected.
The situation remains unpredictable and we will continue to monitor it closely. We are also in regular contact with our partners in Hong Kong who continue to operate as normal. However, HKU SPACE have experienced some disruption to teaching with a change in venue and class times.

In line with University policy any member of staff planning to travel overseas on official University business must complete an online travel risk assessment form before any travel and/or accommodation being booked.
The travel risk assessment is an essential part of preparation for overseas travel and should be carried out well in advance of any trip. The University also has a duty of care to all staff who are planning on travelling overseas on University business and needs to be assured that travellers have fully considered all risks and have put appropriate precautions in place.
