It’s time to have your end of year conversation

​The University is committed to ensuring all colleagues have meaningful and frequent 1:1 conversations with their line managers around performance objectives, and also have personal development objectives in place. 

My Contribution is the tool we use to help deliver this commitment. It is divided into three parts:

  • My Review 
  • My Development 
  • My Career

There are many benefits of My Contribution, including clearly identifying what you want to achieve in the upcoming year and how you are planning to do this. It also helps you to prioritise your efforts on what is important, allows you to measure progress and take pride in achievement, and enables you to identify any challenges and discuss the support you need with your manager. 

My Contribution is underpinned by our commitment to our values and professional behaviours​ and Leadership Behaviours. These explain how each of us is expected to carry out our role so that we not only build our own performance and personal growth but also how we support our colleagues to do the same.

There are three stages of My Contribution: 

As we approach the end of the academic year, it’s now time to complete your End of Year Review. This means you should take time, before the end of July, to: 

  • ​discuss the past year with your line manager;
  • reflect on your main achievements, challenges and any support you will need in the future;
  • reflect on progress against objectives and how you have delivered on our annual plans / strategic priorities; and
  • discuss your personal development, strengths, development areas and future career aspirations.

What you need to do to complete your End of Year review:

  • Review this year’s objectives, add a progress update and then complete the End of Year form, explaining what your main achievements were and how you went about working on those objectives.
  • Meet with your line manager, discuss your self-assessment and your line manager’s feedback. It’s also important to reflect on your personal development during the year - what specific skills and knowledge have you developed? How does that link to your own career aspirations?
  • Close the End of Year form in HR Connect. This means you review the self-assessment, click submit, and this then allows your line manager to finalise their End of Year feedback.

An important note for academic / researcher colleagues: from next year, applications for promotion and award of title will require a completed, good quality End of Year review.
