Mentor Database Information
Currently the mentorship database for the Lothian and Borders area where the majority of practice placement settings are found, currently demonstrates over 4650 mentors that meet the NMC standards together with approximately 1500 sign off mentors. The management of this mentor database has been successfully transferred from Edinburgh Napier University where it was developed to the NHS, with a system of management and updating of this by Charge nurses has been developed. Edinburgh Napier University will however continue to maintain the mentor and sign-off mentor databases for partners who provide placements from within the private and voluntary sectors
Recognition of Previous Learning (RPL) (Mentorship experience)
In 2006 the NMC published Standards to support learning and assessment in practice. This introduced new standards for mentors and required that placement providers develop and maintain local database of current mentors.
Until the 31st of August 2008 experienced mentors who were able to successfully complete a self assessment exercise which identified they met these standards, were annotated on this local database.
As from 1st of September 2008, the NMC now requires that Registered Nurses and Midwives who feel that they meet the standards for mentorship but whose name has not previously been annotated on the local database, can only have their name added by undertaking the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process with the local education provider i.e Edinburgh Napier University.
Please note that if you qualified after Sept 06, the RPL route is not appropriate and that to prepare as a mentor, you should undertake the mentorship preparation programme delivered by Edinburgh Napier University. The first link is a summary of this introduction.
