This Self-directed Update is designed to give you information and evidence for your mentorship annual update, and subsequently towards your triennial review. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in practice (2008) outline standards for existing mentors to remain current in their role. Following reading this update, you are advised to evidence learning and identify further actions which you are going to take forward as a result of this update.

Practice Education Facilitators in NHS Lothian and NHS Borders have developed a range of study sessions for current mentors of nursing and midwifery students. Any of these sessions will meet the NMC requirements of an annual update and are bookable via your line manager and/or PWA / Empower.
