Edinburgh Napier’s Sighthill campus was the venue for a successful spring coffee morning this week, as students and staff got together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.
People with Down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome and, as chromosomes are shaped like socks, the theme of this year’s event was #LotsOfSocks.
Sighthill’s LRC1 was decorated with socks, while many staff also wore brightly coloured or odd socks to join in the fun.
The event was acclaimed as ‘doubly ethical’, as all socks used for the event were donated to Socks of the Street Edinburgh, a charity project that collects socks and underwear for the city’s homeless.
Bruce Harper-McDonald, Lecturer, School of Health & Social Care, said, “The event was an excellent example of University community engagement, which not only helped to raise awareness of Down syndrome but also raised hundreds of pounds for Down Syndrome Scotland.”
