Full Story

On Saturday, 2 June, female researchers from across Scotland will take to their soapboxes on the historic Mound in Edinburgh to share their passion for science with the public.

Soapbox Science was set up bring science to public spaces. Members of the public will have the opportunity to find out more about world-leading research, ask questions, heckle and be inspired by our remarkable women in science.

The speakers will be armed only with a soapbox and a white coat – there are no amplifiers, no blackboard, and definitely no PowerPoint!

This free event is sponsored by Edinburgh Napier, and the University has three researchers taking part:

  • Lara Alshawawreh, PhD student, SEBE - “When a refugee shelter becomes home”

  • Dr Amanda Pitkethly, Lecturer, SAS - “Exercise is Medicine’”

  • Dr Angela Kydd, Associate Professor, SHSC - “The ‘young old’ are ageist against the ‘old old’: The fear of very old age is profound”

The University’s Dawn Smith (RIO) and Clare Taylor (SAS) are also helping to coordinate the Soapbox Science Edinburgh event.

Volunteer with Soapbox Science Edinburgh!
Are you passionate about science and love talking to people about it? Do you want to help raise awareness about gender equality in science careers? Soapbox Science Edinburgh is looking for volunteers to help out at the event on 2 June.

Soapbox Science is not just about the speakers. Without a supportive team of committed, enthusiastic people, a Soapbox event simply cannot happen. Volunteers play a crucial role in rounding up the public, chatting to them informally about science, supporting the speakers by managing props and helping to calm any pre-box nerves, as well as handing out Soapbox goodies to lucky audience members!

But perhaps the most important role of the volunteers is gathering data so we can effectively monitor the success of the event. Volunteers carry out the bulk of our streamlined evaluation process, through interviews, observations and counting footfall.

Join us for an afternoon of fun, informal and inspiring science and help challenge ideas about who can be a scientist!
