Full Story

Edinburgh Napier’s Liz Aston, Associate Professor, School of Applied Sciences, was recently appointed as Director of the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR).

SIPR is a collaboration of 14 universities which works with policing partners, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority, to build research capacity, engage in knowledge exchange and inform policy and practice.

Last week, the new SIPR Hub, based at Edinburgh Napier, welcomed a delegation of 10 researchers from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (pictured above) with speakers and contributors from across Scotland. The two day visit saw discussions on money laundering, organised crime and human trafficking.

This followed on from a one day SIPR Executive Session on Prevention with Police Scotland and other practitioners and academics, with from speakers from Scotland, England, Sweden and Finland.

Meanwhile, the School of Applied Sciences’ Andrew Wooff was the recipient of a SIPR award to research and enhance understanding of the motivations, roles and expectations of the Special Constable in Scotland.

The project aims to support Police Scotland’s strategy 2026 by mapping the motivations, role(s) and expectations of Special Constables. Special Constables have been largely absent from academic policing discourse in Scotland, yet they are an important part of policing. The study will engage with Special Constables, police staff and police officers from across Scotland.
