The Complete University Guide 2020 rankings were released this week, with Edinburgh Napier one of the highest climbers in the UK, jumping 15 places to 86th in the league table.
 
The rankings are based on four factors:
  • Entry standards
  • Student satisfaction
  • Research quality
  • Graduate prospects
 
Key Points from the results
 
  • The University is ranked 86 out of 131 UK universities in the CUG 2020 rankings, rising 15 places, the biggest rise amongst Scottish universities

 

  • Our position is the University’s best performance in the CUG rankings since 2012

 

  • Out of 21 subjects, the University now has 12 standing in the top 25% or 25%-50% of UK universities, compared with 9 out of 21 subjects in last year’s subject tables
 
 
The University’s three best areas of performance, in terms of rank among UK universities, are:
  • Academic service spend (13 out of 131 universities, a jump of 84 places)
  • Entry Standards
  • Good Honours
 
Additionally, Graduate Prospects rose 27 places and Student Staff Ratio rose 13 places.
 
 
 
The University is ranked in the top 20 of UK universities in following subjects
  • Drama, Dance & Cinematics
  • Communication & Media Studies
  • Building

 

 
Out of 21 subjects, the University now has 12 standing in the top 25% or 25%-50% of UK universities, compared with 9 out of 21 subjects in last year’s subject tables. The three subjects rising to top 25% or 25%-50% of UK universities are:
  • Accounting & Finance
  • Building
  • Psychology
 
Compared with UK Modern universities, the University is in the top 25% in 9 of the 21 subjects, compared with 7 of 21 subjects in last year. Accounting & Finance and Civil Engineering are now within the top 25% of UK modern universities.
 
 
 
The University is ranked towards the bottom of the table in the following three areas:
  • Student Satisfaction (derived from the NSS) – 125 out of 131 universities
  • Facilities spend (student facilities including sports, careers services, health, counselling, etc)
  • Research intensity (proportion of staff involved in REF2014)
