Title
Getting ahead: Women in academia and research

Summary
Invitation to Academic Promotions workshop

Full Story

Gender equality has been a concern in the Higher Education sector for some time and while progress has been made, issues remain. At Edinburgh Napier, we have made considerable progress. However, we also recognise that there is more to do which is why we are committed to continually addressing areas of inequality to ensure gender is never a barrier to the achievement for our staff and students.

When it comes to promotion and progression in the workplace, women face a number of challenges in comparison to their male colleagues. Firstly, women are less inclined to put themselves forward for promotion and are more likely to feel constrained by self-perceived limitations in their abilities or achievements. Secondly, workplace culture, practices and expectations tend to be more geared to and favourable towards men. Thirdly, women continue to bear greater responsibility for caring responsibilities, a situation reconfirmed by the experience of women during the pandemic who report a disproportionate impact on their work life balance.

On Monday 28 February, I'll be sharing my experiences at the 'Getting ahead: Women in academia and research' event and I encourage you to join online if you can.

This workshop forms part of the support the University is providing to potential applicants for academic and researcher promotion and is an opportunity to hear first-hand about these challenges from women who have reached senior positions in academia. I will be sharing my own experiences, alongside:

  • Professor Anna Campbell, School of Applied Sciences, Edinburgh Napier
  • Professor Lorna Paul, Professor in Allied Health Science, Glasgow Caledonian University

This workshop will take place on Monday 28 February, from 14.00-15.30. If you are interested in joining, please save the event in your calendar with the following Microsoft Team's link:

Women who are considering applying for promotion are especially welcome, along with their supporters and allies, whatever their gender.

Kind regards,

Nazira Karodia
