The Academic Skills team
The Academic Skills team consists of a small group of advisers dedicated to helping students understand and adjust to the particular expectations associated with university level work. We advise undergraduates, postgraduates and staff members studying at Edinburgh Napier on a range of skills, including planning and structuring essays, paraphrasing and critiquing sources of information, preparing for exams, and tackling the various parts of dissertations. The team works with students and academics in order that the former are best equipped to succeed in their chosen discipline.
Open workshops and one-to-one guidance
We run a programme of open workshops throughout the academic year and across all three campuses. These sessions are available to students from every school and at every stage of their degree programme, undergraduates and postgraduates alike. Details of our various workshops, as well as booking instructions, can be viewed on our myNapier pages.
We also offer academic skills advice on an individual basis. Students can book 30 minute appointments, or come along to drop-in sessions. Appointments are offered on all three campuses, whereas drop-ins take place at Sighthill and Craiglockhart. Details of times and locations are on our myNapier pages, along with appointment booking instructions.
Working with programme and module leaders
We are happy to provide ad hoc workshops tailored to specific modules and assessments. We also work closely with programme leaders from across the university, developing long-term, integrated academic skills programmes tailored to particular cohorts of students. By taking this latter approach, students are introduced to the key features of academic practice early and by increments, ensuring that they develop good and lasting habits.
If you are a programme or module leader and are interested in how we can help, please get in touch to arrange a meeting: firstname.lastname@example.org.
From college to university
The Academic Skills team supports direct entry students who have arrived at the university from college. If you are an academic interested in how we can help direct entry students on your module or programme, then please get in touch to arrange a meeting: email@example.com.
Pre-entry transition support is provided by the Widening Participation team, further details of which can be found on the Coming from College myNapier pages.
We are always looking for new ways to offer students academic skills advice, and to reach those who are rarely (if ever) on campus, such as distance learners and global online students. For instance, we are currently updating online study resources and developing the university’s first peer learning programme. If you have questions or suggestions along these lines, then we’d love to hear them: firstname.lastname@example.org.
