Academic Skills Workshops

What skills workshops are on offer?

The Advisers run a programme of Academic Skills Workshops in Trimesters 1 and 2. The workshops are open to all students and are free of charge. They offer students practical, useful, and time-tested strategies applicable to nearly every aspect of university study. They cover a variety of topics with particular emphasis on the skills required to think critically, deliver effective oral presentations, provide proper citations, and craft well-written essays and reports. A typical workshop runs from one to two hours in length. They are all full of hints and tips on how to help students to improve their marks!

What workshops are available in a typical trimester?

Here's an example of what we offer:

  • Dissertation management and literature reviews
  • Scientific report writing
  • Giving an oral presentation
  • Designing presentations using PowerPoint
  • Designing posters using PowerPoint
  • Using Microsoft Word to format your dissertation or report
  • Making sense of feedback
  • Referencing and plagiarism
  • Structuring your essays and reports
  • Critical analysis for assessments
  • Critical writing
  • Exam preparation and revision

Every Academic Skills Workshop involves students in reflective and engaging activities, designed to support skills development. Due to the popularity of our workshops, it is best to book well in advance.

Do the Advisers offer contextualised workshops?
