Public Transport

Travel guidance during Covid-19

If you need to travel to the University, please plan ahead. Visit Transport Scotland for the latest Scottish Government advice and up-to-date guidance on public transport and active travel.

However you travel, please ensure you are very clear of the facilities available and rules in place before you start your journey. Keep in mind that many public transport operators are running reduced services.

All our campuses can be accessed by public transport. Here you’ll find information about the local transport links and ways to travel between Craiglockhart, Merchiston and Sighthill.

The University offers interest free loans to enable staff to buy an annual rail or bus pass. We do not offer this for Lothian Buses as their monthly direct debit ticket is their cheapest option (cheaper than their annual payment option).

There are bus stops within a short walking distance of all our campuses, with regular services across the city centre serviced by Lothian Buses.

The number 36 service goes between Sighthill, Craiglockhart and Merchiston campuses, making it easy if you need to travel from one campus to another.

Lothian Buses offer a travel card starting at £20 a week or £56 a month. This includes travel on Lothian city buses, NightBus services, airport buses, Lothian Country (city zone and cityWEST zone), East Coast Buses (city zones A and B) and Edinburgh Trams.

Our campuses are served by the following Lothian Bus services:

Craiglockhart: 4, 10, 27, 45, 36

Merchiston: 11, 15, 16, 23, 36, 45

Sighthill: 3, 21, 25, 34, 35, 36, (300 Skylink and 400 Skylink from Bankhead Ave.)

If you’re based at Sighthill or Merchiston, the tram is another quick way to travel to campus:

Sighthill: Bankhead Tram Stop (approx. 10 min walk)

Merchiston: Haymarket Tram Stop (approx. 25 min walk)

Edinburgh Trams are also covered by the Lothian Buses travel card.

The two main train stations in Edinburgh are Waverley and Haymarket. Both stations have a number of options for onward connections, including bus and tram links.

Edinburgh Park Station is located approximately 1 mile from Sighthill Campus and is served by trains from the Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk and West Lothian areas. It is around a 20-25 minute walk from the station to Sighthill Campus, and there is a tram service to Bankhead. The station also has bike storage facilities.

Make sure to download the Transport for Edinburgh app – you can use it to help plan your journey and receive real-time information on services around the city.
