The University used 24,000,000 litres of water in 2017/18. The use of this water results in the emissions of around 25 tonnes of carbon, equating to 0.5% of our total annual carbon emissions from utilities. We gained the Carbon Trust Water Standard in October 2013 for reducing water usage by 24.2% between 01/04/10 and 31/03/13. Since then water consumption has reduced further and is now less than half the amount used in 2006/07 when the University started on its sustainability journey.
Water and effluent cover 2 of the 43 significant aspects identified through our Environmental Management System.
There are many initiatives in place to conserve water, including real time monitoring and waterless urinals.
Staff and students are encouraged to report all water leaks by calling the Facilities Service Desk.
There are chilled mains water dispensers at all campuses free for students, staff and visitors to use.
