​Industrial Action

We recognise both EIS and UNISON unions for the purpose of collective bargaining and negotiations regarding pay and associated terms and conditions for staff in Grades 1-7. Staff can also choose to be members of other unions and we are aware that a small number of staff are members of the University and College Union (UCU).


Over the last 6 months both UCU and UNISON have been carrying out different types of industrial action in relation to the outcome of the 2021-22 national pay negotiations, with the latest UNISON action taking place on 02, 03 and 04 May.

UCU have confirmed their latest industrial action will be in the form of Action Short of Strike (ASOS) which will take place between 23 May 2022 and 07 October 2022 and includes working to contract and not covering for absent colleagues. The previously indicated boycott on all marking and assessment processes has been withdrawn. Please see support documents below for more details on the full implication of ASOS and strike action.

As outlined in previous communications we believe that a fair and affordable pay award outcome was achieved via the negotiations so the further strike action is disappointing, particularly due to the potential impact to our students; however the University fully respects the right of colleagues to take industrial action and accepts that such action is not taken lightly.
