Policies, guidelines & funding


There are some policies and guidelines that you might find useful relating to learning and development.


Staff Development Policy

Our Staff Development Policy outlines the function and scope of staff development at the University.


Funding to attend development activities

  • Our Fees Policy outlines the financial support available to staff who want to attain formal academic and professional qualifications. 


  • Funding for external development is also offered by ILA Scotland. This is a Scottish Government scheme that could help pay up to £500 towards your learning if you are 16 or over, living in Scotland and have an income of £22,000 a year or less or are on benefits.


  • A Professional and Career Development Loan is another source of funding.  The loan could help you pay for learning that enhances your job skills or career prospects. It's a bank loan, so you'll have to pay it back once you've left your course. However, you don't pay interest for the period when you're in learning.


Attending a learning event

Information about registering to attend a learning event, be added to a waitlist of express interest in a learning event is available on our booking, cancelling and learning requests page.

You will need to arrange your own transport to and from the sessions and this includes arranging your own parking if you don't have a permit.

You can claim back your travel expenses for internal courses using the  Inter Campus Travel Expenses Claim form. If you are attending an external Conference / Training event, with the exception of EDC events you will need to complete a


Cancellations and non attendance at an event

Internal Learning Events

You should cancel through HR Connect and give 10 working days notice. Thereafter, your department will be charged a £40 cancellation fee or the event fee, whichever is greater, for cancellations and non attendance on the day, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

External Learning Events

You should cancel through HR Connect and give 10 working days notice, thereafter, your department will be expected to pay a £20 cancellation fee or the event fee, whichever is greater. If you cancel on the day, your department may be charged a £50 cancellation fee or event fee, whichever is the greater, unless there are exceptional circumstances.


To cancel a booking: If you have access to HR Connect Employee Self-Service cancel off an event through you learning account
