Items for Loan
There are self-service kiosks in our libraries, which allow you to borrow and return books yourself. These are easy to use, simply follow the directions on the screen. Otherwise, take your books and ID Card to the Library Help Desk.
You are responsible for all items issued on your ID Card and must not give them to other people or lend your ID Card to others.
Request a book
If a book is on the shelf you can simply go and get the book yourself and borrow it. However, it is out on loan, you can place a request to have it held for you next. You can also place a request if the item is at another campus library, and it will be transferred to the library of your choice for you to collect.
To place a request, use LibrarySearch:
• Sign In (click on Not Signed In at the top right and click 'Sign In').
• Search for the item you want, and click on the link underneath. e.g. 'Currently unavailable, check here for details.'
• Click Request and use Pickup Location to choose the campus library you want to collect it from (e.g. Craiglockhart, Merchiston or Sighthill) Click Request.
An email will be sent to your Edinburgh Napier email account when the item is ready for you to collect at the library.
Most of our books and other loans are now dynamic which means they will be automatically renewed up to a maximum of 4 months unless recalled (known as the Intelligent Loan). If an item on loan to you is requested by another user we will recall it by sending you an email asking you to return it within 7 days or by the due date if less than 7 days.
Keep an eye on the books you have on loan and due dates using the My Library Card section of LibrarySearch.
You can still renew loans yourself:
Sign in to LibrarySearch (click on 'Not Signed in' hover over 'Guest' at the top right, then click 'My Library Card'.
You will see the items you have on loan.
Click on a single item to just renew one or Renew All.
• On the self-service kiosks.
Remember that renewals are not always possible. If you have fines you will not be able to renew existing loans.
NOTE: You will only see 'Renew' next to an item for up to 4 months. After this time, you must return the book and re-issue it on a self-service kiosk or take it to a Library helpdesk to have it re-issued.

We will accept returned items in any Library, but prefer them to be returned to the Library from which you borrowed them. You do not need your ID card when returning items, but make sure you use a self-service kiosk or ensure items are returned by staff.
Outside opening hours you can leave items in the return boxes.
If you return items by post they remain your responsibility until they are discharged from your account.
If you have difficulty renewing or returning items please contact a Campus Library as soon as possible.
If you return an item late, we will ask you to pay a fine and you will be unable to borrow anything else until it has been returned or renewed and any fines paid. See Library Charges/fines. If you have been absent from university due to illness or other extenuating circumstances which have prevented you from returning or renewing loans it may be possible for some or all of the fines to be waived. Please complete a fine appeal form and submit it along with the supporting evidence.
It you don't return an item after a number of reminders, we will assume that the item is lost and generate a Lost Item Bill for it. If you are unable to find the item you can either pay the replacement cost shown in the invoice or provide an acceptable replacement copy.
