Alistair Sambell is Senior Vice Principal and Deputy Vice Chancellor at Edinburgh Napier University, having joined the University in 2012 from Sheffield Hallam University where he was Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences. 

He gained both his first degree and DPhil from York University in Electronic Engineering, and after a spell working in industry joined Northumbria University to undertake research into solar energy. He subsequently moved into an academic role at Northumbria, being appointed Professor of Engineering and moving through various roles that included founding Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences. 

Alistair is passionate about the role of Higher Education in transforming lives and has been active in teaching and research throughout his career, developing research interests to include microwave engineering (in particular antenna design) and pedagogy (in particular assessment for learning) with around 100 related publications. He has been submitted to Research Assessment Exercises in 2001 and 2008, as well as the most recent Research Excellence Framework 2014. 

As Senior Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice Chancellor Alistair has a wide-ranging remit at Edinburgh Napier, both internally and externally, that includes oversight of the academic strategy of the University. He has line management responsibility for the six Deans of School as well as the Deans for Research & Innovation and Learning & Teaching and has had responsibility for leading a range of initiatives and projects including REF submission; QAA institutional review; Athena Swan; Outcome Agreements with the Scottish Funding Council; and the implementation of the new academic appointment and promotions framework. His external activity has included serving on the QAA engineering benchmarking statement group, the IET degree accreditation panel and the committee of the Engineering Professors' Council. He is currently a member of the QAA Scotland Committee as well as the Universities Scotland Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and Learning and Teaching Committee and served as an assessor for the new Teaching Excellence Framework .
