​​I joined Edinbu​​rgh Napier University in Summer 2023 as an Academic Skills Adviser. In my current role, I support students with all aspects of their academic skills development. I also collaborate with staff creating materials and delivering integrated and open workshops, particularly focussing on connections with the School of Applied Sciences. I was awarded my PhD in Human Geography from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2018. I have worked as a Lecturer in Geography in several UK HE institutions, and I have experience of teaching, research, and pastoral responsibilities. I am interested in better understanding how universities can support students to make the most of their studies, particularly in the context of challenging circumstances such as the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis.

I joined Edinburgh Napier in 2017 as Quality & Standards Manager and have held various roles in higher education in the UK and overseas since 1999.
 

I have a particular interest in student engagement and student-staff partnership. I lead on student involvement in our quality processes and work closely with colleagues in the University and ENSA to take forward student engagement initiatives. I am also a member of the University’s PDT Forum, constituted to enhance personal development tutoring at the University and to support the University’s Personal Development Tutors (PDTs).
 

​As Quality & Standards link for the School of Applied Sciences, I supporedt the School through Institution-led review and the approval of new programmes. Together with colleagues in the Quality & Standards Team I provided advice and guidance on the University’s Quality Framework and Academic Regulations​.
 

​I am a QAA ELIR Reviewer and member of Scotland’s Quality Forum. I represent the University at sparqs Student Engagement Staff Network, am on the Board of UKAT (UK Advising & Tutoring), and participated in the Advance HE Aurora programme (2013/14 cohort). I have a Masters in German from Pennsylvania State University, where I taught undergraduate courses in German language and German cultural studies.

​​John’s main involvement for the Department is as a reviewer and facilitator for ENroute and in the PgCert Teaching & Supporting Learning assessments. His main academic concern nowadays is with the formative development of core skills, the promotion of reflective practice, and self-assessment​. He is also an active reviewer for a number of educational journals. He welcomes any requests for assistance in shaping programmes to develop core abilities, and in preparing papers for publication.

I previously worked at Edinburgh Napier as a research assistant at DLTE from 2014–16. In 2016 I ventured over to New Zealand to embark upon a PhD in social-ecology at Auckland University of Technology, where I received a Commonwealth Scholarship.            


Just over three years later, I have returned to DLTE in a new position as a part-time lecturer in Education. In this role, I play an active part in the delivery of the International Learning and Teaching Module in Higher Education (international).            

My research interests are in active learning, action research and student-centred learning approaches. In addition, I continue to engage in ecology and interdisciplinary collaborative work with colleagues internationally.

I am a Associate Professor in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University.I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA).  

   

I lead the MSc in Blended and Online Education, and lecture on the ​Postgraduate Certificate in Learning,Teaching and AssessmentPractice in Higher Education programme.   

   

I have led on a number of institutional initiatives, including the Digital Support Partnership project, a cross-university strategic project to support all staff in student engagement in online learning and teaching during the academic year 2020-21 and the short-life working group on Blended Learning in 2022. I am currently engaged in internal and external work on the rapidly developing context of higher education learning, teaching and assessment in the age of generative artificial intelligence.​  

   

I have worked in a number of universities in the UK as a learning technologist, academic developer, lecturer and software developer. I am also an experienced theatre director and practitioner, and I like to explore creative approaches to academic development. I am an editor for the journal Research in Learning Technology​.  

My research interests include the relationship between digital teaching and theory, critical digital pedagogy and open education practices.  

   

I am open to applications for PhDs in the areas of digital education, academic practice, higher education, critical digital and AI literacy, and theories of learning and teaching.​​​​​​​​

I joined Edinburgh Napier University in Spring 2022 as an Academic Skills Adviser after working in a variety of teaching and student academic support roles in the UK and USA since 2012.   

  

In my current role, I support students with all aspects of their academic skills development. I also collaborate with staff creating materials and delivering integrated and open workshops, particularly focussing on connections with the School of Health and Social Care.   

  

I am recently completed a PhD in Linguistics where my research investigates phraseological competence using corpus methods to improve language testing.
