Design principles

  • Net Zero Carbon – investment decisions will be informed by our objective of achieving net carbon zero by 2030 at the latest, and our wider sustainability commitments including biodiversity and adaptation
  • Distinctiveness - our investments in Estates and Facilities will enable us to be distinctive both in what we do and how we do it showcasing our research, innovation, education, learning, teaching and values, with a particular focus on advancing inclusion
  • Strategic objectives - options will be assessed in relation to their alignment and contribution to delivery of our strategic objectives
  • We will create flexible solutions that can evolve, change and adapt to future needs and maximise campus utilisation
  • Staff, student and key stakeholder engagement – we will ensure our proposals are informed by our key users and stakeholders
  • Student and staff health, wellbeing, safety and security will underpin our decision-making
  • Investment in L&T spaces will embed options for effective HyFlex/blended engagement
  • Investment in research facilities in synergy with our L&T pipeline and should enable integration of research and teaching, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Communities – we will seek to collaborate and invest with our local community partners
  • Enhancing student experience remains a key priority, with specialist facilities to support wellbeing, engagement and employability
  • Benefits – generation of additional revenues and financial return on investment will be prioritised where applicable e.g. for research infrastructure, but not all benefits will be financial, with investments to underpin commitments related to inclusion, employability, sustainability, student experience and community engagement realising different benefits
