Accessibility and Inclusion

Support for disabled users and your individual needs.

The library aims to:

  • Provide equal opportunity and access to services and collections
  • Take a positive and flexible approach to promoting the full integration of everyone into all aspects of our activities
  • Work with Student Wellbeing and Inclusion and other departments as required to identify the best way to meet students' specific needs
  • Be open and receptive to feedback and welcome comments on our service

Access to the physical library

Detailed information about access to our three campus libraries and the specialised services provided are listed in the AccessAble website.

See My Napier for information about about height adjustable desks and accessible toilets.

Services available

Additional services available include:

  • Requests / available items pick-up - to help with mobility issues or difficulty reading / understanding library layouts and shelf-marks.
  • Texts can be provided in digital formats.
  • A designated friend / family member, with written permission, can act on your behalf.

Specialist software is provided on the University computer network. To arrange training in the use of specialist software, contact the Disability and Inclusion team.

Alternative Formats

If you need access to books in an alternative format, please contact disabilityandinclusion@napier.ac.uk. The Disability and Inclusion team can help you access the RNIB Bookshare scheme.

Anyone with a print disability as a result of, but not limited to, sight loss, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, or a physical disability, is able to access RNIB Bookshare. This allows you to use hundreds of thousands of accessible online books and textbooks. You can also request a digital copy of a print resource you need for your learning, teaching or research. If you want to use this service, please allow as much advance notice as possible. Turnaround times depend on the publisher and can be as little as 24 hours or up to 10 weeks.

Many Edinburgh Napier University Library books, textbooks and journals are already available as full text online. When you search for an item using LibrarySearch, use the filters on the right hand side to limit to Availability > Full Text Online. How easy it is to make an item more accessible (e.g. change the text size or have it read out to you) depends on the individual publisher.

Working with students

Advice for staff working with students can be found on the Disability and Inclusion pages.

Who to contact

All library staff are happy to help with our services but there are people at each campus with specific responsibility for assisting with any individual requirements you may have. You can help by giving us advance notice of your requirements, please contact us by email: library@napier.ac.uk. Due to the range of demands on library staff it will not always be possible to provide additional assistance immediately, but we will respond as soon as we can.
