Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training

​Student Accommodation has arranged for their team to receive Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training and Certification and would like to invite other members of staff to take part. 

The training sessions will run over two days on the following dates:

19 – 20 June 2017 (9.30am – 4.30pm)
4 – 5 July 2017 (9.30am – 4.30pm)

Session locations to be confirmed
 
Should either you or a member of your team be interested in attending these sessions - and being certifed as Scottish Mental Health First Aiders - please email d.mccormick@napier.ac.uk by 15 June, indicating your preferred session as well as the Service you work in.

Scottish Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognised certification managed by NHS Health Scotland. Each instructor is extensively trained by NHS Health Scotland and the required materials are regularly updated to ensure relevance and accuracy. 
 
What will I learn on the course?

• How to apply the 5 steps of SMHFA

• How to respond if you believe someone is at risk of suicide

• How to give immediate help until professional help is available

• The importance of good listening skills

• Practice listening and responding

• Understanding recovery from mental health problems

• Understanding the connection between mental health problems and alcohol and drugs

• Understanding the connection between mental health problems and discrimination

• Some basic information about common mental health problems

• Self help information

What happens on a SMHFA course

The course takes 12 hours and will run over two days.

It is an interesting course that includes different activities, films, discussions and even some fun and laughter.

You will get a certificate of attendance and a manual to take away with you at the end so that you can remind yourself of what you’ve learned. 

 
The aims of SMHFA are:

• To preserve life

• To provide help to prevent the mental health problem or crisis 
   developing into a more serious state

• To promote the recovery of good mental health

• To provide comfort to a person experiencing distress

• To promote understanding of mental health issues

The course will give you the knowledge to apply these aims in real life situations.

Cost: Free for Edinburgh Napier staff
