Wi-Fi Refresh Project

Wi-Fi logoInformation Services (IS) are currently improving the eduroam Wi-Fi service as part of the Wireless LAN Refresh Project.

The benefits to upgrading the wireless infrastructure are numerous.  Increased speed and connectivity will significantly improve student and staff experience.  The upgrade will also enable IS to embrace future wireless technologies such as geographical location based services, further enhancing user experience.

The project started in March 2018 and is nearing completion.  To date IS have:

  • Installed 180 new Wireless Access Points (APs).
  • Increased capacity from 25 clients per AP to up to 400 clients per AP.
  • Increased speed from 10mb per client to average speeds of 300mb.

The Wireless Coverage Maps of the JKCC highlight the significant increase in coverage - the lighter areas indicating increased levels of coverage:

We are delighted to announce that Craiglockhart and Sighthill wireless improvements are complete.  Work is ongoing at Merchiston and is expected to be complete by Easter 2019.
