External Examiner Annual Reports for 2013/14
External examiners are experienced higher education teachers who offer an independent assessment of academic standards and the quality of assessment within Institutions. At Edinburgh Napier University we appoint external examiners to oversee both modules and programmes.
External examiners are important in helping us to ensure that the degrees that we award are of a comparable standard to those offered elsewhere in the UK and that are assessment procedures are rigorous and fair. External examiners are also important in helping us to identify and share the good practice which takes place throughout the University.
All external examiners are asked to submit an annual report where they are asked to provide an independent and objective appraisal of the standard and quality of our provision. At Edinburgh Napier, the annual report is provided using a standard proforma which is then considered in detail by module, programme and/or subject group teams and student representatives should also be invited to consider the reports. Faculties are responsible for ensuring that issues raised in the external examiner's annual reports are responded to and an action plan generated.

Academic Quality has analysed all external examiner reports received to draw out common themes and any issues to be noted on an institutional level.
