Born and educated in Glasgow, Allan has worked extensively overseas, principally in the USA, Germany, Holland and India.  Retired from the position of Senior Executive in Scotland for Diageo PLC in 2006 . Works extensively as a non executive director and has served on a number of boards in support of Scotland's development, which include SCDI, CBI, and the Scottish Whisky Association.

Allan is currently Chairman of Scotland Food and Drink, Chairman of Action for Children Scotland .Deputy Chair of The National Theatre of Scotland and a board member of the Scottish Prison Service.

He is married with two children and two grandchildren.
