Title
British Psychosocial Oncology Society annual conference – 27 February

Description

Our School of Health & Social Care’s Jenny Young and Richard Kyle are the ‘local hosts’ for the British Psychosocial Oncology Society annual conference at the Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh later this month, the first time it’s been held in Scotland in ten years.

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Personalisation, Policy & Practice’, linking specifically with the work being done in the Population & Public Health Theme but relevant to the whole School’s ethos of health and social care integration. It also links in with the Scottish Government’s recent call to become the first country in the UK to offer targeted support for every cancer patient.

Keynote speakers include:

  • The Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, Catherine Calderwood
  • Liz O’Riordan, Consultant Breast Surgeon & patient, nominated for Woman of the Year in 2016, TEDx speaker and co- author of 'The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control'
  • Gerry Humphris, from the University of St Andrew’s, founder of the Humphris Group which is interested in the psychological aspects of oral health including dental phobia, chronic facial pain, communication in cancer care and oral cancer

The conference attracts delegates from academia, clinical practice and the third sector from the UK and beyond. The charities Macmillan and Maggie’s will also be attending and have provided sponsorship.

Importantly, there are also patients and carers attending too and there is a bursary available for a patient/carer to attend.

More information can be found here.
