Keep on Track
Keep on Track general referrals
Keep on Track (KoT) is for students who may be struggling to settle in to university, or who may be thinking of leaving, or are at risk of leaving. It provides
a triage service for students who may require multiple supports put in place in
response to concerns relating to academic and/or wider welfare issues. A Keep
on Track adviser will case-manage, and coordinate students’ needs in support of
success and retention. For those who decide they want to leave or suspend their
studies, support will be offered to the student through this process.
We run drop-ins each week on each campus to encourage early conversations with students who feel they are not adjusting to university life. Our aim is to encourage early access to support to aid retention. Drop-in times/locations are detailed on the Keep on Track My Napier page.
The Keep on Track general referral form
can be found here.
Information for students on how to access
this service can be found on My Napier. Appointments are available face-to-face
on campus, via phone call, video call or over email.
Examples of a general referral to
Keep on Track (out-with Student Engagement Reporting)
- a student who requires coordination of support to help them
remain at university.
- a student who is thinking of leaving and could benefit
talking through this decision in-depth with someone out-with their school and
understand the implications of withdrawing from their studies.
- a student who has not appeared on the non-engagement report
yet, but there has been a marked change/reduction in their engagement and is
not responding to academic staffs’ multiple attempts to contact them over a few
weeks.
A note about consent - To make a general referral to Keep on Track
(out-with Student Engagement Reporting – see below) gaining a student’s consent
to be referred is preferred. However, Keep on Track does not require a
student’s consent to reach out to them.
A student is not required to access Keep on
Track before they leave
the university. If they are certain they want to leave and require ‘support to
exit’ information, please refer the student to My Napier. Please also see helpful information in
the PDT Toolkit FAQ
about leaving.
Student Engagement Reporting (SER)
Keep on Track supports the Student
Engagement Reporting project (see the guidance here
and Staff
Intranet info here).
If a student appears on the
non-engagement report for three weeks running, and a PDT has been unable to
contact them after two attempts over the first two-week period they appear on
the non-engagement report, the student should be referred to Keep on Track using this form.
On receipt of an appropriate referral, Keep
on Track will attempt to contact the student offering support and if contact is
unsuccessful, the Advisers will either contact the student’s emergency contact
to ascertain their wellbeing or instigate a police welfare check as a last
resort. Keep on Track will feed back to the PDT once contact with the student
has been made.
Please note: if a student has been
referred to Keep on Track as a general referral (e.g., for support to be
coordinated that they may need to remain at university; to discuss leaving
university; for another reason) and then the student appears on the non-engagement
report, please ensure this student is still referred to Keep on Track as a
Student Engagement Reporting referral.
