Full Story

Female researchers from across Scotland took to their soapboxes on the historic Mound in Edinburgh this month to share their passion for science with the public.

Soapbox Science was set up to bring science to public spaces, giving members of the public the opportunity to find out more about world-leading research, ask questions, heckle and be inspired by -remarkable women in science.

The speakers were armed only with a soapbox and a white coat – there were no amplifiers, no blackboard, and definitely no PowerPoint!

The free event was sponsored by Edinburgh Napier, and two colleagues took part. The School of Computing’s Laura Muir presented on “There’s more to computing than coding – designing human-computer interactions”, while the School of Applied Sciences’ Clare Taylor highlighted how “Salmonella could be your friend”.

Laura said, “I was quite nervous about doing it but I’m so glad I did. It was lovely speaking to people on the Royal Mile about what we can learn from eye tracking. They were so interested and asked really great questions!”
