Title
University Mace Bearer opportunity

Description

The University Mace is a traditional symbol of power and represents the University's governing authority.

It is present only when the University Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor, or designated representative, attends a formal event and signifies that the proceedings have official sanction.

Traditionally, The Mace Bearer carries the ceremonial Mace and precedes the Chancellor and/or Vice-Chancellor and other dignitaries in the procession.

Currently, we are seeking an individual who has the University's values at heart, to take on the important responsibility of University Mace Bearer, presiding over ceremonial processions and attending civic events throughout the year.

The Role:

The position of University Mace Bearer will see you taking on a number of ceremonial duties throughout the academic year and commands familiarity with all traditions associated with the events on the University's calendar, including graduation ceremonies and other civic events (for example organised by Edinburgh City Council or the Lord Provost's Office).

The post will provide you with an excellent opportunity to express your dedication to the values of the University while you represent ENU at these public events, carrying the ceremonial Mace, leading processions and taking formal responsibility for the safe keeping of this valuable item, along with any transportation arrangements required to ensure the Mace is available.

You will find yourself in an ideal position to use your organisation and planning skills to produce a calendar of events with times, dates, and locations, for each academic year, liaising with the Principal's Office (for civic events) and the Student Administration Team in the School Support Service (for graduation ceremonies).

The role will also allow you to utilise your excellent communication skills as you liaise with all levels of staff, including senior members of the University such as the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and University Court.

Because several of these events are outwith the normal working week, time off in lieu (TOIL) will be approved in advance by the Director of Strategy & Planning, in conjunction with your designated day-to-day manager.

The role also requires a formal dress code at events so the University will provide you with financial resource to purchase any necessary items, including gowns, bow tie, gloves, etc.

This is a prestigious post that not only offers significant involvement in all University ceremonial proceedings, but also a number of unique experiences, valuable networking opportunities and the chance to be a visual ambassador for the University as a whole.

What we will need from you:

  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • Excellent organisation and planning skills
  • An appropriate degree of decorum and appreciation for ceremonial tradition
  • Flexibility to attend events outwith the working week
  • Ability to undertake the physical task of carrying the Mace and gowns and standing for periods of time.
