UNISON have informed us they are asking members to participate in a further three days of strike action in relation to the outcome of the 2021-22 national pay negotiations on:

  • ​Monday 2 May 
  • Tuesday 3 May 
  • Wednesday 4 May 

As outlined in previous communications, we believe that a fair and affordable pay award outcome was achieved in the 2021-22 negotiations so the further strike action by UNISON is disappointing, particularly due to the potential impact to our students; however, the University fully respects the right of colleagues to take industrial action and accepts that such action is not taken lightly.

With colleagues taking part in strike action, IT support both on campus and via the Service Desk will be reduced. It is likely there will be delays in responding to IT support calls and the priority will be given to urgent issues affecting learning and teaching. There will be a reduced staff presence and face to face support in the Library, and delays with the delivery of Click and Collect and Inter Library Loans services. To minimise the opportunity for service impact, IS have rescheduled all system changes planned for the week of strike action to recommence from Monday 9 May.

We are also anticipating a reduced catering service. As a minimum, tea and coffee and cold food options including sandwiches and salads will be available at all campuses.

What to do if you are participating in strike action

If you plan to participate in strike action you need to make the University aware. While you are not legally obliged to do so before the action is taken, it would be preferable to let both the University and our students know in advance by recording on HR Connect or informing your line manager. However, if you do not inform us before the event, you are legally obliged to inform the University on your first day back at work and record this on HR Connect following each day of strike action.

This is to ensure we have a record of all staff taking strike action and also so the relevant pay deductions are made.
