​League Tables

 

The ranking of Universities in league tables has traditionally been published by newspapers in the UK, although much of the emphasis now is on producing online outputs that are available worldwide.  Aimed mostly at undergraduate applicants to Universities, the league tables now have an impact in the overall reputation of a University.  League table position is particularly valued and used by international students in making their University choice in the UK.

 

League tables are not the only source of performance information that is available, but are useful in that they bring together a collection of different indicators to rank performance in a summary format.  The data used to inform the league tables is centrally sourced through agencies such as the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) to ensure consistency across the sector. Other information such as Student Satisfaction is collated through the National Student Survey.

 

Each league table has a different methodology and weighting behind each indicator, but there are broad similarities of categories:
