English as a Foreign Language
Short Courses
We help each School to organise either credit or non-credit bearing short courses & summer/ winter schools tailored to suit different needs and requirements, whether it is to:
Respond to an overseas organisation’s request;
Engage in international students’ activities;
Enhance relationships with existing partners;
Increase student numbers enrolled onto a programme (intensive, credit bearing course).
A standard programme comprises academic modules delivered directly by academic staff in schools and cultural excursions organised by us to explore the top attractions in Edinburgh and Scotland. Moreover, we will offer top-class practical support such as VISA letters (if required), accommodation arrangement, airport transfers, welcome packs and handbooks, end of course certificates and so forth.
The duration can be flexible. An international summer/winter school would normally be between 2 and 8 weeks whereas a CPD short course would normally be between 2 and 10 days.
If you would like us to assist you and your partners, please do not hesitate to email April Tsai on 0131 455 4445 or a.tsai@napier.ac.uk.
Pre-sessional Courses
We offer 6 week, 12 week and Year Long pre-sessional courses throughout the year for international students who need to reach the university’s language criteria (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent). At the end of courses, students sit the ENU Language exam before progression to a degree programme.
As the first point of contact with the university, our programme team helps students with all practical aspects of living in Edinburgh. We also continue to support students ‘Post Pre-sessional’ in their initial assignments during Trimester 1. We have strong links with other ENU Student Support Services and the NSA.
A 4 week pre-sessional is available for international students who already have the required language level but need induction to UK Academic Culture. We encourage module leaders to direct international students to the 4 week programme, if they have had difficulties during the academic year. We continue to enhance our programme quality and are currently, preparing for BALEAP accreditation.
This year, in collaboration with International Operations we are piloting pre-sessional delivery at Chinese partner universities, GUFE, ZZULI, SDUFE and BSCU. Students will study for 5 or 8 weeks in China, before joining the 4 week program in August. We welcome other ideas or requests for pre-sessional delivery that can be tailored to suit student groups, in line with the university’s recruitment strategy.
For enquiries about Pre-sessional provision in Edinburgh or overseas, contact April Tsai on 0131 445 4445 or a.tsai@napier.ac.uk.
