Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme
Background
On 28 February 2011 the new PVG Scheme went live. This replaces Disclosure Scotland police checks for staff members.
Disclosure checks only provided background police check information and were only valid for the period of time up to the date the check was processed (no future information was provided if there was a change to an individual’s police record).
Key Points:
• An Organisation must not offer regulated work to a barred person (using the PVG Scheme to prevent this).
• Organisations must only use the PVG Scheme for regulated work (it’s not just about protecting children – it’s about protecting individuals privacy and not initiating a police check unless it is for an individual who will be completing regulated work).
• Organisations must remove a person from regulated work if Disclosure Scotland advise them that they have become barred (not necessarily if they are under consideration, in this instance an internal risk assessment required).
