Multi-Function Devices

Image of MFD
A Multi-Function Device (MFD) is a machine that can print, copy and scan. These devices have faster print speeds and allow additional functionality such as scan to email.

Secure print and follow-me printing are two of the key features of the new devices.

There is currently an MFD Upgrade Project which will see the installation of brand new MFDs across the University – starting with the student areas at Craiglockhart and Sighthill for the start of trimester 1 (staff machines will follow) and next summer at Merchiston.  Find out more...

Green Printing imageMFDs deliver sustainable and efficient printing, copying and scanning across the University while also improving the reliability, availability and functionality for students and staff.

The process of printer rationalisation with replacing individual printers with energy efficient MFDs reduced energy usage and floor space. A reduction in printing and paper through intelligent printing, reduction in consumable usage and waste all to reduce environmental impact.

Benefits

  • Reduce total cost of ownership
  • Single type of printer to support
  • Single type of consumables
  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Reduce print to user ratio
  • Energy efficient printers
  • Increase efficiency and flexibility
  • A more secure environment for University data.

FAQs

FAQ image
Q: Where are the MFDs located?

A:  An MFD device is located within a short distance of everyone’s work space.

Q: What is secure printing?
A: Secure printing means that:

  • You must log in to the network before you can send documents to print
  • You must log in to the printer or swipe your ID card before you can release your print job, meaning that no-one else can release it
  • Your documents are stored securely on our server while waiting to print
  • You only retrieve jobs when and where you need them, so your print-outs are not left unattended
  • Any print jobs not released are deleted after 24 hours
  • You can print via email to the print server

Q: What is follow-me printing?
A:  Follow-me printing allows you to collect your printing from any printer across the University.

Q: What if I don't have a University staff card or I've forgotten my card?
A:
You can also log in to the MFD using your University login ID and password, click on the Alternate Login button.

Q:  Why is my password not recognised by the MFD?
A:  MFD screen is very sensitive, try using Caps Lock rather than the shift key for Uppercase letters in your password.

Q: Can I request a personal printer?
A:  All users will have access to the enhanced MFD service. Personal printers will be the exception. They'll only continue to be used in specific circumstances such as specialised print, e.g. Printing ID Cards or if an individual has special needs identified under DDA.

Further information is available in the University's Print Policy.

Q: How do I order paper for the new MFDs?

A: If paper is required the individual super users or print champions should follow the MFD Paper Ordering procedure.
