Ownership and Aims of Induction Week

Induction is owned at School and Programme level and is delivered in partnership with NSA and the Professional Services. For further information about the principles which should guide induction activities visit Induction Principles.

For Trimester 1:

  • The first week is called Freshers’ Week, with modular teaching starting for all students (new and continuing) in week 2.
  • Programme led activities for continuing students may be offered in week 1 at Programme Leaders’ discretion.

For Trimester 2:

  • Induction is offered either before the first week or during the first week (incorporated into a week 1 modular timetable).
  • Teaching will commence in the first week.

Overall, the key aims of induction are to:

  • Motivate and inspire students through purposeful activity which promotes the subject interest of the programme;
  • Introduce key elements of the programme, approaches to learning and associated timetable;
  • Introduce key staff including their PDT and clarify expectations on both sides;
  • Quickly support the ongoing development of peer networks and promote a sense of belonging;
  • Ensure that all essential administrative processes are completed;
  • Promote understanding of the information, support, advice and opportunities available and how to access them, balanced with the need to avoid overload.
